Let’s learn Mosaic or Overlay Crochet!

You must be confident with basic stitches such as sc (UK dc) & dc (UK tr). This is NOT a learn to crochet course. All the specific stitches for this technique are taught in class.

Course Structure

The first 2 weeks we’ll be learning the techniques. For the last 2 weeks we’ll be making our final project. I have a design you can follow. More advanced students can create their own designs once they are familiar with the techniques.

Dates & Times

  • Week 1 : Monday 4th November, 12:30-2:30pm
  • Week 2 : Monday 11th November, 12:30-2:30pm
  • Week 3 : Monday 18th November, 12:30-2:30pm
  • Week 4 : Monday 25th November, 12:30-2:30pm

Venue

Riverhouse Barn Art Centre
Studio (in courtyard at the back of the Riverhouse)
Manor Road
Walton-on-Thames
Surrey KT12 2PF

Cost of the Course

£80

What’s included?

  • 4 x2 hour sessions.
  • Printed class notes.
  • Online resources for key techniques – this course does not have the full curriculum online.

Tools & Materials

You will need to supply your own DK yarn & hooks (details below) for your final project.
Hooks: 3.5mm & 4mm.

Choosing the right yarn for your project.

We will be using a DK yarn for this project.

You’ll need at least 3 colours, and 375m per colour. You will need to check the yardage of your chosen yarn. It should be roughly 3x50g balls per colour BUT PLEASE CHECK THE SPECIFIC YARDAGE of your chosen yarn if you are not using any of my suggested yarns. Get in touch if you are not sure.

  1. Natural yarns work best, such as cotton & wool.
  2. As usual, I would avoid very dark colours for learning the techniques.
  3. “Stable” yarns work best – very squishy merinos and silks may not give the desired result.
  4. Avoid silky, shiny, “fancy” or “fashion” yarns which includes fur type yarns or yarns with added “bits” or “textures” as you will struggle to work with it and it will also conceal the stitch texture.
  5. Rule of thumb – if you are in a position to buy extra yarn to be on the safe side, please do!

Here are some suggested yarns. These are just suggestions, you don’t have to get any of these but it will give you an idea of the kind of thing that would work.

  • Paintbox Cotton DK
  • The Yarn Collective Bloomsbury DK
  • Valley Yarns Haydenville DK (Merino Blend)
  • Willow & Lark Poetry (Merino Blend)
  • Cascade Superwash

New Crochet Motif for Granny Square Day 2024

August 16, 2024 //  by mezza//  Leave a Comment

I actually designed this crochet motif for Granny Square Day 2024 about 6 months ago when I was playing around with another stitch pattern and as usual didn’t leave myself enough time to write up the pattern, draw the chart and film/edit/upload a video. So, a day late, I just have the first draft of the written instructions with a photo tutorial.

I don’t actually have a name yet for this motif! All suggestions welcome 🙂
For the sample in the photos, I have used Rico Design Ricorumi Cotton DK with a 4mm hook in Reed Green 075.

I’d say this is a slightly more advanced motif, you need to pay attention and be aware of the orientation of each round and where the corners are. If you are not a super confident crocheter, you may want to wait until I have made the video tutorial. If you enjoy a challenge then you can grab the pattern now from my Crochet Motif Pattern Directory which is FREE to sign-up to.

Sign up here: Mezzacraft Crochet Motif Pattern Directory (opens in new tab)

You’ll also find my Granny Square Day designs from 2022 & 2023.

Enjoy!

August 3, 2024 //  by mezza//  Leave a Comment

This stitch pattern combination came as a result of helping someone on Facebook trying the decipher some pattern instructions. The instructions turned out to be incorrect but in the process of trying to work it out, I came up with this stitch combination to demonstration how to make the x-stitch correctly.

I have created a video, written instructions and chart for the x-st and dc combination which are available for FREE. Simply sign up* to my new Crochet Stitch Pattern Directory

You can also access the video tutorial for the x-st and dc combination on YouTube but for the additional resources, you need to sign-up* to my free directory: click here

FAQ

Q: Why is the course 4 weeks long?
A : I have seen many day classes and classes that are a couple of hours long, promising to teach you to crochet. Of course there are some that can pick things up very quickly, but a key element of learning to crochet is muscle memory… this is very difficult to achieve in a short, one off class. In fact, a large percentage of my students had previously attended these kinds of classes and not quite managed to commit the techniques to memory. My immersive courses allow you to go home and practice what you’ve learnt in class and come back to me the following week for help with anything you’re unsure of. This 4 week structure really allows the skills to sink in and stick!

Q: Do I need to practice between classes?
A : Definitely! Learning to crochet requires repetition to build muscle memory. Practicing between classes will enable you to get the most out of the course.

Q: I would like to attend your course but I am not able to make all the classes.
A : You can still get a lot out of the course, even if you have to skip some of the weeks, however,  Week 1 & Week 2 are mandatory. It’s very difficult for me to re-teach a whole missed class for one student and then fit in the content for the scheduled class. I have tried to do this in the past and ends up being unsatisfactory for the the student trying to catch up and also for the other students who didn’t miss a class. You will be sent class notes and videos (where applicable) for any classes missed and I’m happy to help via email/WhatsApp. The full cost of the course also applies, even if you can only make some of the classes.

Q: Is this class suitable for children (under 18s)?
A: This is not a straightforward answer, please click this link to read my full policy on teaching children.

Q: I do not need the starter kit as I have my own yarn and hooks.
A: After many years of teaching crochet to beginners, I have found that the hooks and yarn used make a massive difference to how easily the student picks up the technique and how much they enjoy the experience. Students that bring unsuitable equipment invariably end up frustrated so I have made the decision to provide and include all the materials in the cost of the course.

Q: I am a knitter. I’d like to crochet but I’m worried I won’t be able to.
A: Yes, I have come across this concern many times. There still seems to be a misconception that you either knit or crochet… of course you can do both! Often those with previous experience of knitting or other types of handicrafts can find picking up a new skill relatively easy.

Q: I use a wheelchair, is there wheelchair access to the studio?
A: Please check with Farnham Maltings.

Q: The dates of this course don’t suit me, will you be running another course and if so, when?
A: Yes, I run my beginners classes regularly. The best way to stay up to date with my courses is to sign up to my newsletter here: Mezzacraft Newsletter .

Q: What are your terms & conditions?
A: Please read our full terms and conditions here: Terms & Conditions

Q: I would like to attend your course but I am not able to make all the classes.
A : You can still get a lot out of the course, even if you have to skip some of the weeks, however,  Week 1 & Week 2 are mandatory. Each class builds on the skills learnt in the previous class. It’s very difficult for me to re-teach a whole missed class for one student and then fit in the content for the scheduled class. I have tried to do this in the past and ends up being unsatisfactory for the the student trying to catch up and also for the other students who didn’t miss a class. Q: I am left handed, what what are my options?
A: Although I crochet and teach right handed, I have taught many left-handed students. Crochet is a two handed craft which does rely heavily on the left hand. Right handed students have to learn to control their non dominant left hand so I always encourage you to start off giving it a go with your non-dominant right hand. Most of my left handed students end up learning right handed. If you find this too difficult you can switch to left handed. Although I cannot demonstrate, I am still able to talk you through the steps for making stitches and also spot & correct any mistakes. Please make sure you are happy with this, as I appreciate that I may not be the correct teacher for you if you already know you are very left hand dominant.

Q: Is this class suitable for children (under 18s)?

Chunky Cables & Bobbles Cowl – Crochet Course – Monday Evenings 16/9/24

July 25, 2024 //  by mezza//  Leave a Comment

Make a cozy cowl using crocheted cable stitches and bobbles. Bobbles are optional in your final cowl!

Skill Level : Improvers

You must be confident with basic stitches such as sc (UK dc) & dc (UK tr). This is NOT a learn to crochet course. All the specific stitches for this technique are taught in class.

Course Structure

The first 2 weeks we’ll be learning the techniques. For the last 2 weeks we’ll be making our cowls. I have a selection of designs you can follow. More advanced students can create their own designs once they are familiar with the techniques.

Dates & Times

  • Week 1 – Monday 16th September 7:30-8:30pm
  • Week 2 – Monday 23rd September 7:30-8:30pm
  • Week 3 – Monday 30th September 7:30-8:30pm
  • Week 4 – Monday 7th October 7:30-8:30pm

Venue

St. Erconwalds Catholic Church
22 Esher Avenue
Walton-On-Thames
Surrey KT12 2TA

Cost of the Course

£80

What’s included?

  • 4 x2 hour sessions.
  • Printed class notes.
  • Online resources for most of the techniques (I taught this as an online course during covid). As usual, I am happy to create additional content if required, for specific techniques.
  • One ball of yarn for practicing the stitches (this is not enough to make your cowl).

Tools & Materials

You will need to supply your own yarn & hook (details below) for your final project.
6-7mm hook depending on your yarn gauge. If possible, ensure you have 6, 6.5 & 7mm.
I will have some spare hooks – these are £4 each. Please bring money on the day.

Choosing the right yarn for your project.

Chunky yarns, unfortunately, fit within quite a wide parameter of thicknesses. I would therefore look for a chunky yarn that requires a needle size of 6-8mm (often a hook size isn’t mentioned on yarn bands). Check the yardage – we’re looking for between 95-140m per 100g ball or 48-70m per 50g ball. You may need to go down to a 6mm crochet hook if you choose something with more yardage (i.e. it will be thinner) – but since we’re making a cowl, gauge isn’t critical. If you feel confident, you can also work 2 strands of Aran together as a substitute for one strand of chunky but I would not recommend that for beginners.

  1. Look for a chunky yarn that uses needle size 6-8mm, between 95-140m per 100g.
  2. Robust yarns with firm stitch definition work best, e.g. yarns with silk or some very soft yarns will be too floppy and the cowl won’t sit properly when being worn.
  3. Choose a yarn in a single, solid colour, without variegation. Yarns with a natural marl or tweed can look good.
  4. Light colours work best with cabling, it’s difficult to see the stitch textures with dark yarns. Avoid dark yarns as they are hard to work with and the texture of the cables is often lost.
  5. Avoid “fancy” or “fashion” yarns which includes fur type yarns or yarns with added “bits” or “textures” as you will struggle to work with it and it will also conceal the stitch texture.
  6. Do you have very sensitive skin around your neck and face? Make sure you choose a yarn that isn’t going to irritate you such as a Merino.
  7. To make the cowl, you will need approx. 220 metres / 240 yards in total which is usually about 2 x 100g balls or 4 x 50g balls – but check the yardage of the particular yarn you are buying as they vary so much!
  8. If you are planning on making lots of bobbles, you will need more yarn as bobbles use lots of yarn!
  9. Rule of thumb – if you are in a position to buy an extra ball to be on the safe side, please do!

Here are some suggested yarns, ranging from economy to more luxurious (and pricey)… these are just suggestions, you don’t have to get any of these but it will give you an idea of the kind of thing that would work. I cannot vouch for whether you might consider some “scratchy” but a general rule of thumb is that merino is less irritating next to the skin.
As you know, I do prefer natural yarns but have included some “blends” for cheaper options.
Prices were correct at the time of typing and may be sale prices.

Cancellations : Should you need to cancel, refunds for the course can only be given up to 14 days before the start of the course and are subject to an administration fee of £15. After this time, i.e. 2/9/24, I am unable to issue refunds as I have already committed to the hire of the venue and the purchase of all course materials and it doesn’t leave me enough time to find a replacement student to make the course financially viable. Of course, full refunds will be given in the event that the course is cancelled due to the venue or I cancelling the course.
Transfers : If you need to transfer from the same course to a different date or time, this must be done no later than 14 days before the start of the course. After this time, i.e. 2/9/24, additional fees will apply, depending on how many bookings I have on each course.
Thank you for your understanding.

Chunky Cables & Bobbles Cowl – Crochet Course – Monday Afternoons 16/9/24

  • Week 1 – Monday 16th September 12:30-2:30pm
  • Week 2 – Monday 23rd September 12:30-2:30pm
  • Week 3 – Monday 30th September 12:30-2:30pm
  • Week 4 – Monday 7th October 12:30-2:30pm

Venue

Riverhouse Barn Art Centre
Studio (in courtyard at the back of the Riverhouse)
Manor Road
Walton-on-Thames
Surrey KT12 2PF

All links open in new tab/window.

  • Debbie Bliss Merion (50% wool 50% acrylic) 100m per 100g £6.30
  • Malabrigo Chunky (100% Merino) 95m per 100g £10.99
  • Valley Yarns Superwash Bulky (100% Merino Wool) 100m per 100g £8.04
  • West Yorkshire Spinners Re:treat 140m per 100g £5.19
  • Valley Yarns Haydenville Bulky (60% Merino Wool 40%) Acrylic 100m per 100g £6.29
  • Cascade Baby Alpaca Chunky (100% Baby Alpaca) 99m per 100m £12.34

A: Yes, there is a ramp into the studio. Please get in touch when you book and I will double check with the staff at the Riverhouse that everything is set up correctly for you.

Important – Cancellation Policy Update

I have hesitated to implement this policy in the past, although it has always been in place as part of my terms & conditions. However, due to a high dropout rate for some of my recent courses, sometimes days before the course starts, I have been left in a situation where I am often not covering my costs and/or earning even a minimum wage. Therefore, I regret that I will now have to implement the policy so that I am able to continue teaching. Should you need to cancel, refunds for the course can only be given up to 14 days before the start of the course and are subject to an administration fee of £15. After this time, i.e. 22/10/24, I am unable to issue refunds as I have already committed to the hire of the venue and the purchase of all course materials and it doesn’t leave me enough time to find a replacement student to make the course financially viable. Of course, full refunds will be given in the event that the course is cancelled due to Riverhouse Barn or I cancelling the course. Thank you for your understanding.

Important – why you need to make this exact motif for the course

The joins we are learning can be applied to many motifs, made with any thickness of yarn and hook, in some cases with a bit of modification, however for the purpose of the workshop, please use this exact pattern & yarn thickness so that you can easily follow the instructions in our workshop.

selection of three round granny squares crochet in cotton with crochet joins

Traditional Three Round Granny Square Instructions

Tools & Materials

DK yarn in 3 colours, (cotton or super-wash wools work up best).
3.5-4mm hook – depending on your personal gauge, i.e. a larger hook if you are a tight crocheter or smaller hook if you are a loose crocheter.

Key US terminology (British terminology in brackets)

beg – beginning
ch – chain
dc – double crochet (tr – treble crochet)
sl st – slip stitch
sp – space

Round 1: 4ch and join in 1st ch to form a ring; 5ch (counts as 1dc & ch2sp in this and all subsequent rounds*); (in ring – 3dc, ch2) 3 times; 2dc in ring; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch5; fasten off.

*If this results in a larger space compared to the other 3 corners, you can switch to a 4ch at the start of each round, you’ll still end the round by making a sl st in the 3rd ch.

Round 2: Join new colour in any ch2 corner sp* – 5ch & 3dc in same sp; (in next corner sp – 3dc, 2ch, 3dc) 3 times; in first corner sp – 2dc; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch5; fasten off.

*For this and all subsequent rows, it’s best to avoid the same corner that you finished the last round on.

Round 3: Join new colour in any ch2 corner sp – 5ch & 3dc in same sp; (between next 2 dc clusters – 3dc; in next corner sp – 3dc, 2ch, 3dc) 3 times; between next 2 dc clusters – 3dc; in first corner sp – 2dc; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch5; fasten off.

Sew in all ends, except the final tail.

How many motifs to make?

We will be covering 2 different joins in the first class and 2 more in the second. So you will need to bring 8 motifs to each class.
