FAQ

Q: Why is the course 4 weeks long?
A : I have seen many day classes and classes that are a couple of hours long, promising to teach you to crochet. Of course there are some that can pick things up very quickly, but a key element of learning to crochet is muscle memory… this is very difficult to achieve in a short, one off class. In fact, a large percentage of my students had previously attended these kinds of classes and not quite managed to commit the techniques to memory. My immersive courses allow you to go home and practice what you’ve learnt in class and come back to me the following week for help with anything you’re unsure of. This 4 week structure really allows the skills to sink in and stick!

Q: I would like to attend your course but I am not able to make all the classes.
A : You can still get a lot out of the course, even if you have to skip some of the weeks, however,  Week 1 & Week 2 are mandatory. It’s very difficult for me to re-teach a whole missed class for one student and then fit in the content for the scheduled class. I have tried to do this in the past and ends up being unsatisfactory for the the student trying to catch up and also for the other students who didn’t miss a class. You will be sent class notes and videos (where applicable) for any classes missed and I’m happy to help via email/WhatsApp. The full cost of the course also applies, even if you can only make some of the classes.

Q: Is this class suitable for children (under 18s)?
A: This is not a straightforward answer, please click this link to read my full policy on teaching children.

Q: I do not need the starter kit as I have my own yarn and hooks.
A: After many years of teaching crochet to beginners, I have found that the hooks and yarn used make a massive difference to how easily the student picks up the technique and how much they enjoy the experience. Students that bring unsuitable equipment invariably end up frustrated so I have made the decision to provide and include all the materials in the cost of the course.

Q: I am a knitter. I’d like to crochet but I’m worried I won’t be able to.
A: Yes, I have come across this concern many times. There still seems to be a misconception that you either knit or crochet… of course you can do both! Often those with previous experience of knitting or other types of handicrafts can find picking up a new skill relatively easy.

Q: I use a wheelchair, is there wheelchair access to the studio?
A: Yes, there is a ramp into the studio. Please get in touch when you book and I will double check with the staff at the Riverhouse that everything is set up correctly for you.

Q: The dates of this course don’t suit me, will you be running another course and if so, when?
A: Yes, I run my beginners classes regularly. The best way to stay up to date with my courses is to sign up to my newsletter here: Mezzacraft Newsletter .

Q: What are your terms & conditions?
A: Please read our full terms and conditions here: Terms & Conditions

Important – Cancellation Policy

I have hesitated to implement this policy in the past, although it has always been in place as part of my terms & conditions. However, due to a high dropout rate for some of my recent courses, sometimes days before the course starts, I have been left in a situation where I am often not covering my costs and/or earning even a minimum wage. Therefore, I regret that I will now have to implement the policy so that I am able to continue teaching. Should you need to cancel, refunds for the course can only be given up to 14 days before the start of the course and are subject to an administration fee of £15. After this time, i.e. 16/6/24, I am unable to issue refunds as I have already committed to the hire of the venue and the purchase of all course materials and it doesn’t leave me enough time to find a replacement student to make the course financially viable. Of course, full refunds will be given in the event that the course is cancelled due to Riverhouse Barn or I cancelling the course. Thank you for your understanding.

Explore Broomstick Crochet – Walton-on-Thames – Monday Daytime Course – Starting 29/04/24

April 19, 2024 //  by mezza//  Leave a Comment

For our next adventure, we’ll be learning about “Broomstick Crochet”. This is a fun & easy technique that works up quickly. After the first couple of weeks you will have built up enough skills in the technique to tackle something simple like a shawl or wrap or even challenge yourself with something a little more complex such as a garment. Either way, I’m sure you’ll be glad you tried this very enjoyable crochet technique.

We’ll be covering:

  1. The types of yarn that work best with broomstick crochet.
  2. Classic peacock eye stitch and straight stitch.
  3. Cross stitch and mountain stitch.
  4. Combining standard crochet stitches with broomstick.
  5. Increasing and decreasing.
  6. Seaming.
  7. Basic garment construction for those that are interested (drop sleeve sweater).

Skill Level

This is an easy crochet technique to master, but you must have basic crochet skills. Not suitable for complete beginners.

Duration: 3 weeks

Week 1: Monday 29th April 12:30-2:30pm
(no class Monday 6th May – Bank Holiday)
Week 2: Monday 13th May 12:30-2:30pm
Week 3: Monday 20th May 12:30-2:30pm

Venue

The Riverhouse Barn Arts Centre, Walton-on-Thames, KT12 2P

Cost

£54 (for 3 weeks, 3×2 hour sessions) – includes a 20mm broomstick needle but NOT yarn.

What to bring

All you need for the first class is some yarn – something easy to work with, such as DK cotton, but do also bring any other yarn you might have as this technique can look good in a variety of yarns. DK, aran, worsted or even a chunky yarn and colour changing yarn can also look great. There are lots of ways to experiment with this once you’ve got the hang of it. However, as usual, I would avoid black & very dark yarns as it’s difficult to see what’s what.
Please also bring a range of hooks suitable for the yarn you have… i.e. 3-4mm for DK, 4-5mm for worsted & 6-7mm for chunky.

3 Week Course (3 x 2 hour sessions) Starting at 12:30pm on Monday 29th April 2024 at the Riverhouse Barn Arts Centre.

Simple Shell Crochet Border for Blankets & Wraps

April 1, 2024 //  by mezza//  Leave a Comment

This video shows you how to make a simple shell crochet border – perfect for blankets, wraps, scarves and even the cuffs and hems of tops and sweaters.

I’ve made two videos showing you how to make a simple shell crochet border for different scenarios:

  1. Making a border around a rectangular piece of work, such as a blanket or wrap that has corners.
  2. Putting a border around a hem or a cuff (no corners).

In these videos, I have used my 4 Round Granny Square pattern with the Join-As-You-Go technique.

Video Tutorial – Simple Shell Crochet Border on a Blanket or Wrap

Video Tutorial – Simple Shell Crochet Border on a Sleeve or Cuff

Simple Shell Crochet Border – Basic Instructions for Blanket or Wrap (with corners)

1. Use the same yarn and hook size that you used for the main part of your project. e.g. I used a DK yarn and 4mm hook for my granny squares so I have used the same for my border.
2. Start with a setup row of sc (UK dc), ensuring that the final stitch count is divisible by 4 +1 (this is the stitch pattern repeat).
3. Start in the 5th stitch to the right of any corner space.
4. Place 1sc in each st of the motif. Where the motifs join, place 1sc in each ch corner space and 1sc in each sl st join. Place a marker in the 1st & 3rd sc made in the corner. The corner shell must be made in the middle stitch.
5. Make increases or decreases depending on factors such as gauge and rounding to hit the correct stitch count for the pattern repeat (i.e. stitch count must be divisible by 4 with 1 remaining stitch).
6. End the round with a sl st in the first sc made.
7. For the shell/scalloped round, start with a 1ch, 1sc in same st, [skip 1 stitch and make 5 dc (UK 5 tr) in the next stitch, skip 1 stitch & slip stitch into the next] repeat as necessary until you hit the corners; skip the stitch with the marker and make a 5dc shell in the empty corner stitch.
8. Finish with a slip stitch in the first stitch made and fasten off.

Simple Shell Crochet Border – Basic Instructions for Hems & Cuffs

1. Use the same yarn and hook size that you used for the main part of your project. e.g. I used a DK yarn and 4mm hook for my granny squares so I have used the same for my border.
2. Start with a setup row of sc (UK dc), ensuring that the final stitch count is divisible by 4 (this is the stitch pattern repeat).
3. Start near a side seam.
4. Place 1sc in each st of the motif. Where the motifs join, place 1sc in each ch corner space and 1sc in each sl st join.
5. Make increases or decreases depending on factors such as gauge and rounding to hit the correct stitch count for the pattern repeat (i.e. stitch count must be divisible by 4).
6. End the round with a sl st in the first sc made.
7. For the shell/scalloped round, start with a 1ch, 1sc in same st, [skip 1 stitch and make 5 dc (UK 5 tr) in the next stitch, skip 1 stitch & slip stitch into the next] repeat as necessary until you come back round to the start.
8. Finish with a slip stitch in the first stitch made and fasten off.

How to Fix the Hole in the Center of Your Granny Square

March 26, 2024 //  by mezza//  1 Comment

This video shows you how to tighten a hole in the middle of your granny square that’s bigger than you’d like – it’s a fix! If you want to learn how to PREVENT this happening in the first place, please check out this post: 6 Tips for a Perfect Starting Ring for Crochet Motifs.

My crochet advice stems from more than 10 years experience of teaching hundreds of students in person, in and around Surrey, UK.

Video Tutorial – How to Fix the Hole in the Center of Your Granny Square

How to Fix the Hole in the Center of Your Granny Square

Use the tail end of your motif to create a kind of drawstring to close up the hole.
1. Thread the tail end onto a tapestry or wool needle.
2. Making sure you’re at the back of the work, sew through each strand of yarn at the base of the stitches, all the way around the inside of the ring, making sure you’re catching all the strands of the legs.
3. Pull the tail tight, drawing the hole closed.
4. Fasten off with a couple of small back stitches and weave the end in before carefully snipping off with scissors?

Don’t have a long enough tail?

No worries, use a fresh piece of yarn in the same colour, or eve some sewing thread, and do the same thing but tie the ends together before weaving in your ends.

6 Tips for a Perfect Starting Ring for Crochet Motifs

  • Make sure you are making the slip knot loop correctly.
  • Don’t make the first chain too tight.
  • Make sure the remaining chains are not too tight and not too baggy.
  • Join in the correct part of the first chain.
  • Don’t hold the tail end, only the chain 4 you have made for the ring.
  • Make sure you slip stitch to join and don’t inadvertently make a single crochet (UK dc).

Summer Granny Square Crochet Pattern – designed to be lighter and more open for summer tops. It has less stitches (2 dc/UKtr clusters instead of 3) and a chain 1 space between each set of clusters on the sides. The 5th, joining round, is made of traditional granny stitch clusters.

Raffia Bag Crochet Course – Monday Evenings – Esher – Starting 15/4/24

March 16, 2024 //  by mezza//  Leave a Comment

Crochet your own raffia shopping bag or handbag with this 4 week course which allows you to create a unique bag.

The course covers shape, sizing, stitch combinations and types of handle. Design your own bag using the techniques we learn in class or follow one of my patterns.

Skill Level

You must be confident with basic stitches. Working with raffia takes a bit of getting used to, so I would not recommend this course for anyone that has only recently started crocheting.

Materials

You will receive one ball of raffia as part of the course (no colour options). This is for practicing the stitches and techniques. You can either purchase your own raffia for a bag or I have added the option of buying enough raffia to make a shopper sized bag. Please note, I have only purchased 2 sets of each colour so the colours will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.

If you are buying your own, you will need at least 405m of raffia yarn that is suitable for knitting/crochet. Please note that not all raffia sold is suitable for crocheting with – some of it will be designed exclusively for crafting/flower arranging etc and will not be nice to crochet with.

Colours

About the Raffia

Please note, this is in effect “paper yarn” and not traditional raffia which would have been made from leaves and is not very easy or cost effective to crochet with.

Dates

  • Week 1 – Monday 15th April 7:30-9:30pm
  • Week 2 – Monday 22nd April 7:30-9:30pm
  • Week 3 – Monday 29th April 7:30-9:30pm
  • NO CLASS ON Monday 6th May as it is a Bank Holiday

Important – Cancellation Policy

Should you need to cancel, refunds for the course can only be given up to 14 days before the start of the course and are subject to an administration fee of £15. The cost of any materials ordered cannot be refunded. After this time, i.e. 01/04/2024, I am unable to issue refunds as I have already committed to the hire of the venue and the purchase of all course materials and it doesn’t leave me enough time to find a replacement student to make the course financially viable for me. Additionally, refunds are not given if you are unable to attend some of the classes. Of course, full refunds will be given in the event that the course is cancelled due to the venue or I cancelling the course. Thank you for your understanding.
