Crochet Classes

Joining Crochet Motifs – Walton-on-Thames – Starting Tuesday 4/11/25

August 6, 2025 //  by mezza//  1 Comment

From join-as-you-go, to more decorative crochet borders, discover beautiful and effective ways to join your crochet motifs. During this 2 week course ( 2 x 2 hour sessions), we’re aiming to try 2 different joining techniques each week.

Get to grips with some game changing joins such as “JAGY” and continuous joins.

You’ll learn which joins are best suited to different projects such as bags, blankets and clothing.

IMPORTANT

If you are doing my “Design & Make a Granny Square Sweater” course, this is an essential skill to learn! If you are unable to attend this course in person, please sign-up for the online version and make sure you familiarize yourself with the process. I would highly recommend having a go at making samples using the key joins before embarking on your sweater – you won’t regret it!

Skill level

Students should be confident with basic crochet techniques such as dc(UK)/sc(US), tr(UK)/dc(US), slip stitching, chaining and counting stitches.

Materials required

What do I need to bring to class?
8 or 16 granny squares (see below) with some extra yarn in a couple of contrasting colours for the joins. Your hooks, scissors and a wool/tapestry needle. Reading glasses if you wear them.

How many granny squares?
Please bring 8 motifs per class. You can either make 16 or 8 and reuse them the second week.

What motif should I make?
In order to follow the tutorials correctly, use my traditional, 3 round granny square pattern exactly as written (see below), even if you usually make yours differently. Once you understand the concepts, you will be able to convert the joins to most motifs.

What yarn & hook size should I make them with?
A DK cotton or merino is fine. Make them with a 3.5mm or a 4mm hook, depending on your gauge. Please use the same or compatible yarn for the joining techniques.

What are the colour considerations?
The main consideration is the joining colour. Join with a different colour to the last round of your motifs – this is so that you can clearly see the join you are making in contrast to the actual motif. Your traditional granny squares could actually even be made of a single colour.

Times & Dates

Week 1 : Tuesday 4th November 7:30-9:30pm
Week 2 : Tuesday 11th November 7:30-9:30pm

Venue

Riverhouse Barn Art Centre
Studio (in courtyard at the back of the Riverhouse)
Manor Road
Walton-on-Thames
Surrey KT12 2PF

New! Online only course

I’ve added an option for an online version of this course. You’ll gain access to this course via my learning platform from Tuesday 4th November. Important – why you need to make this exact motif for the course

The joins we are learning can be applied to many motifs, made with any thickness of yarn and hook, in some cases with a bit of modification, however for the purpose of the workshop, please use this exact pattern & yarn thickness so that you can easily follow the instructions in our workshop.

selection of three round granny squares crochet in cotton with crochet joins

Traditional Three Round Granny Square Instructions

Tools & Materials

DK yarn in 3 colours, (cotton or super-wash wools work up best).
3.5-4mm hook – depending on your personal gauge, i.e. a larger hook if you are a tight crocheter or smaller hook if you are a loose crocheter.

Key US terminology (British terminology in brackets)

beg – beginning
ch – chain
dc – double crochet (tr – treble crochet)
sl st – slip stitch
sp – space

Round 1: 4ch and join in 1st ch to form a ring; 5ch (counts as 1dc & ch2sp in this and all subsequent rounds*); (in ring – 3dc, ch2) 3 times; 2dc in ring; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch5; fasten off.

*If this results in a larger space compared to the other 3 corners, you can switch to a 4ch at the start of each round, you’ll still end the round by making a sl st in the 3rd ch.

Round 2: Join new colour in any ch2 corner sp* – 5ch & 3dc in same sp; (in next corner sp – 3dc, 2ch, 3dc) 3 times; in first corner sp – 2dc; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch5; fasten off.

*For this and all subsequent rows, it’s best to avoid the same corner that you finished the last round on.

Round 3: Join new colour in any ch2 corner sp – 5ch & 3dc in same sp; (between next 2 dc clusters – 3dc; in next corner sp – 3dc, 2ch, 3dc) 3 times; between next 2 dc clusters – 3dc; in first corner sp – 2dc; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch5; fasten off.

Sew in all ends, except the final tail.

How many motifs to make?

We will be covering 2 different joins in the first class and 2 more in the second. So you will need to bring 8 motifs to each class or re-use the same 8 motifs in week 2.

Crochet Clinic (one off sessions)- Farnham – 4/12/25 & 11/12/25

July 30, 2025 //  by mezza//  Leave a Comment

These are two off sessions at the Princess Royal Pub in Farnham (Runfold) from 10am-12pm on Thursday 4ht & 11th December 2025. Some students also stay for lunch afterwards.

What is a “Crochet Clinic”?

These are sessions I occasionally run where students can get help with their crochet projects. This can cover a range of different things:

  • Help with a project from one of my courses.
  • Help with a pattern.
  • Advice on starting a specific pattern such as yarn substitutions etc.
  • Advice on fixing mistakes.
  • Help on adjusting patterns for fit.

Please note: this is not the course for you if you want to learn to crochet or if you want to learn different types of crochet such as Tunisian. Additionally, if you need help with designing a garment from scratch, please book a one-to-one session or sign up for one of my design courses.

What to expect

I try to give everyone the same amount of time. If 6 people turn up, I will divide the 2 hour session into 6 x 20 minute slots and set a timer. It’s very tricky to calculate how much time each person will need but if you are not comfortable with this format, you may be better off booking me for a one-to-one session (which I generally only run during the school holidays).
When it’s not your turn, you can either work on a project of your own, or you can observe me helping the other students’ clinic slots. Many students have reported that they found it useful and interesting even if they don’t have that problem themselves.

If you’re currently stuck on a project, I advise bringing along another piece of crochet that you can work on while you wait for your slot.

Venue for Crochet Clinic Farnham

The Princess Royal Pub, we’re usually in the section to the far right, as you come in through the main entrance.
Guildford Road,
Runfold,
Farnham,
Surrey, GU10 1NX

Booking

You can just turn up and pay on the day (cash) or complete the booking form below. Booking helps me get an idea of numbers. Bookings are non-refundable.

Learn the Japanese Continuous Method for Motifs – Crochet Course Starting 9/6/25

May 23, 2025 //  by mezza//  1 Comment

Do you love the look of multiple crochet motifs joined together but hate all the ends? Or maybe you don’t mind the ends but would prefer to save yarn and time? Then this course is for you! Learn the Japanese Continuous Method for Motifs. We will learn the ingenious method of making multiple motifs in sequence, with only 2 ends to sew in!

I have a couple of motifs, a two round square to learn the technique with (the blue fabric) and a three round block (the cream motif used in my cardigan). Once you’ve mastered the technique, it’s possible to apply it to almost any motif.

Skill level

Intermediate/Advanced: Important, students must be confident with basic crochet techniques such as dc(UK)/sc(US), tr(UK)/dc(US), slip stitching, chaining and counting stitches. If you have not crocheted anything in a while, make sure you re-familiarize yourself with these stitches, as we won’t have time for refreshing the basics.

All other techniques will be taught in class.

Intermediate students can use the technique to make a wrap, stole or blanket, i.e. a rectangular or square piece of fabric.

Advanced/Adventurous students can have a go at making a shrug or cardigan – please note there is not a pattern for this, only a “recipe” based on what I have already made so if you want to do this you will need to be happy with very minimal guidance as the course is fundamentally focusing on mastering the technique rather than making a garment.

Tools & Materials

To practice the technique, please bring some cotton DK yarn & a 3.5mm hook. A 4ply cotton with a 3mm hook will also work.

Yarns with a solid colour work best – variegated or multi-coloured yarns can detract from the motif and make reading the stitches tricky.

For making a stole, wrap or other garment, I recommend 4ply yarn.
For making a blanket, you can use DK & a 4mm hook.

What kind of yarn?

As usual, natural fibres are going to work best. Cottons, merinos, wool and blends thereof. Something that feels good next to the skin. Sock yarn would work well.

How much yarn will I need?

Ah yes! This is always the important question but difficult to answer when we don’t yet know what we’re making or how big we are making something. I can give you a very rough guide but be prepared to adjust once you’ve decided on your main project.

Shrug or wrap – 800m 4ply
Throw (small blanket) -1800m DK

Online Content?

I currently have no video content for this course. As usual, throughout the duration of the course, I will endeavor to create videos for any particular techniques people are commonly struggling with but please see this course as fundamentally an “in person” course.

Times & Dates

This is a 4 week course (4 x 2 hour sessions).

Week 1 : Monday 9th June 7:30-9:30pm
Week 2 : Monday 16th June 7:30-9:30pm
Week 3 : Monday 23rd June 7:30-9:30pm

This workshop is designed as an introduction to crochet. I’ve developed a small project that the parent and child (9+) can each make, learning together.

You’ll be making a small bowl which will teach you how to hold the hook and yarn, chain, make a single crochet (UK double crochet), how to slip stitch and fasten off. You’ll also have the opportunity to embellish your bowl to make it unique.

Please read the next section carefully before signing up. Parents/guardians are best suited to determine the suitability of the class for their child and hopefully an understanding of the way I teach my classes will help you make your decision!

Class Structure & Guidelines

  • This workshop is aimed at students aged 9 and above with a participating adult (parent or guardian aged 18+).
  • No previous crochet experience is required from either the parent or child.
  • This is a 2 hour workshop.
  • For this workshop, I will teach a maximum of 8 students (4 adults & 4 children).
  • We learn through demonstration, practical application and the use of our class notes & photo tutorials.
  • I am not qualified to teach students with severe disabilities and learning difficulties.
  • All students should understand that during the learning process we make mistakes and it takes repetition and a willingness to try again in order to progress.

What’s included?

As well as the tuition provided in class, the course also includes detailed class notes with photo tutorials, everything you need, including hook, yarn, needles & stitch markers. You’ll also receive a login so that you can access video tutorials of everything covered in class.

Top Down Crochet Sweater Masterclass – Walton-on-Thames – Mondays starting 02/06/25

March 31, 2025 //  by mezza//  Leave a Comment

In this Top Down Crochet Sweater Masterclass, you’ll learn how to make this beautiful sweater – lightweight and super soft! Although it’s made with fine yarn, it works up pretty quickly because we’re using a relatively large hook and easy to crochet and easy to memorize stitch pattern.

You’ll learn how to crochet a top-down sweater – working in the round from the neck yoke. We’ll go over how to calculate the number of stitches you need, how to split for the arms and body and how to create the slight bell shaped sleeves – or indeed, sleeves that are not as full – depending on your preference. The seamless construction can be applied to a multitude of stitch patterns – once you’ve mastered it, you could try making different tops using your favourite stitches.

Don’t want to use mohair? No problem! You can also use a 4ply yarn.

Skill Level

You must be confident with the basic crochet stitches such as sc (UK double), dc (UK treble), slip stitching and chaining. For less experienced crocheters, I would highly recommend making the sweater in 4ply first, rather than mohair.

Introduction to Filet Crochet – Farnham – Starting 08/05/25

March 21, 2025 //  by mezza//  Leave a Comment

Let’s explore filet crochet. During this 3 week course ( 3 x 2 hour sessions), we’ll cover the key techniques of working in the filet crochet style such as the basic principles of: reading & crocheting the charts, increasing and decreasing, borders and designing your own patterns. You can create something very traditional in thread or use the techniques with a thicker yarn to make a modern project such as the rug shown below (pattern for this is included in the course*).

Skill level

Students should be confident with basic crochet techniques such as dc(UK)/sc(US), tr(UK)/dc(US), slip stitching, chaining and counting stitches. All other techniques will be taught in class.

Tools & Materials

Traditionally, filet crochet is worked with thread. For this course, we will use thread crochet that’s on the thicker end of the scale to make it easier for everyone!
A ball of thread (100g DMC Petra No.5 RRP £6) is included as part of the course.
You will need a 1.75mm or 2mm crochet hook for making the sample. If you don’t have one, you can buy one when booking, please choose the correct option when booking.
Please remember that depending on your personal gauge, you may need a smaller or larger hook, i.e. from 1.5mm – 2.5mm.

*If you want to make the rug, you’ll need a 6mm or 7mm hook & a 3mm braided cord yarn such as Bobbiny Braided Cord or Lovely Cottons Braided Cord. Approx 500g/200m for the rug shown below. If you can afford it, always buy more than you need! As usual, we can adjust the pattern if you need a larger or smaller rug… or indeed if you want to use the same design to make something else, such as a scarf or wrap in a different yarn.

Week 1 : 10:00am-12:00pm Thursday 8th May 2025
