Let’s explore filet crochet. During this 2 week course ( 2 x 2 hour sessions), we’ll cover the key techniques of working in the filet crochet style such as the basic principles of: reading & crocheting the charts, increasing and decreasing, borders and designing your own patterns. You can create something very traditional in thread or use the techniques with a thicker yarn to make a modern project such as the rug shown below (pattern for this is included in the course*).
Skill level
Students should be confident with basic crochet techniques such as dc(UK)/sc(US), tr(UK)/dc(US), slip stitching, chaining and counting stitches. All other techniques will be taught in class.
Tools & Materials
Traditionally, filet crochet is worked with thread. For this course, we will use thread crochet that’s on the thicker end of the scale to make it easier for everyone!
A ball of thread (100g DMC Petra No.5 RRP £6) is included as part of the course.
You will need a 2mm crochet hook for making the sample. If you don’t have one, you can buy one when booking, please choose the correct option when booking.
Please remember that depending on your personal gauge, you may need a smaller or larger hook, i.e. from 1.5mm – 2.4mm.
*If you want to make the rug, you’ll need a 6mm or 7mm hook & a 3mm or 5mm braided cord yarn such as Bobbiny Braided Cord or Lovely Cottons Braided Cord. Approx 500g/200m for the rug shown below. If you can afford it, always buy more than you need! As usual, we can adjust the pattern if you need a larger or smaller rug… or indeed if you want to use the same design to make something else, such as a scarf or wrap in a different yarn.
